The day opened with Scott’s team walking the street with genuinely good news for once: an entire episode’s worth of screen time handed over to a dog kennel challenge, in honour of Shaynna Blaze’s birthday and Vision Australia’s Seeing Eye Dogs program. Ninety minutes, flat-pack kennels, and a $10,000 prize from Simparica Trio on the line, plus the return of the bonus-point gnome. Rick and Tayla ditched their flat pack entirely and built from scratch, against Scott’s own advice that they wouldn’t finish in time. They finished. “Best in show goes to Rick and Tayla,” Shaynna announced, handing them the cash, the gnome, and an early claim on the week’s momentum.
Back on site, Adam and Jolene’s tiling week wobbled from the jump. Their new tiling crew swore every mitred edge was already cut; none of them were, forcing a scramble for an angle grinder after hours just to keep the room moving before the power tools curfew hit. Foreman Dan didn’t mince words about the state of it: not yet properly under way tiling this late in the piece, he said, “is a disaster.”
Next door, Lisa and Rosco’s week unravelled a different way. A nib wall built to conceal plumbing for their vanity turned out to be 100mm too high, forcing a mid-build demolition of their own framing just to get the tap heights right. Chantel wasn’t thrilled to be reminded of it. “We’re already helping them by hooking them up with waterproofers week one, tilers week two, which ended up helping them win a $200,000 kitchen,” she said. “Now we’ve got trades working over trades.” Scott and Shelley’s walkaround with Courtney and Sev afterwards didn’t soften anything either: told their spend was already tracking toward $30,000 against a $20,000 budget, they were warned they risked becoming the first team in Block history to miss out purely on money, quizzed on how much Cursio help they’d been getting, and banned outright from using render or micro-cement next week, including their planned feature behind the TV unit. “The only thing I want to see on the walls is paint,” Shelley told them flatly.
Amid all of it, Lisa and Rosco quietly marked their fourth wedding anniversary on site, Rosco visibly hoping someone, anyone, would remember before he had to say something. Good Friday brought the whole street’s first proper reset of the week: a lunch at Crittenden Wines, followed by an egg-and-spoon race that escalated into a three-legged relay. Rick and Tayla, fresh off their kennel win, took that out too. “We win, we win, we win,” Tayla sang, as the rest of the street quietly plotted its comeback for the final push into Sunday.
