Questions people actually ask us
Season 18 dragged The Block out of the suburbs and into the Macedon Ranges for a “Tree Change”: five country blocks on McGeorge Road, Gisborne, ten acres of mud, and a season that opened with a team quitting on night one because the show was, quote, not “on brand” for them. The brand in question was a renovation show. They were there to renovate. It only got stranger from there.
The Season 18 Wrap, for People in a Hurry
The Tree Change season swapped party walls for paddocks and asked five teams to build full country homes with landscaping budgets the size of a small farm’s annual turnover. Influencer couple Joel Patfull and Elle Ferguson walked off site within the first 48 hours and were replaced by Rachel and Ryan, who deserve some kind of medal for joining The Block after the trolley had already left the station. Interest rates were climbing all season, and everyone quietly knew auction day was going to be a white-knuckle affair. It was.
The Five Teams (Plus the Two Who Lasted One Night)
- Omar and Oz (House 5): Best mates, relentless winners of room reveals, and eventually owners of the single largest auction profit the show had ever produced. Also copped a points penalty over a discounted piano, which is the most Block sentence ever written.
- Tom and Sarah-Jane (House 1): The plumber and the dancer. Won a swag of rooms including a perfect-30 kitchen week, topped the leaderboard, and were rewarded at auction with a profit of $20,000.99. The 99 cents somehow makes it worse.
- Rachel and Ryan (House 2): The last-minute replacements. Passed in on auction day, sold minutes later for $4,249,000.50 and a $169,000.50 profit.
- Ankur and Sharon (House 3): Battled budget dramas most of the season, passed in at auction, and sold the following week for $4.25 million, a $170,000 profit.
- Dylan and Jenny (House 4): The season’s hard-luck story. Passed in at auction, and their house did not sell until months later, for $3.9 million, under reserve. Profit: zero dollars.
Who Won The Block 2022?
Omar and Oz won The Block 2022. Their Gisborne home sold under the hammer for $5,666,666.66 against a $4.08 million reserve, a profit of $1,586,666.66 plus the $100,000 winner’s prize: $1,686,666.66 in total, the biggest winning result in the show’s history at the time. The buyer was IT entrepreneur and serial Block bidder Danny Wallis, whose paddle apparently does not know the word reserve.
The 2022 Auction: One Record, Three Pass-Ins
The 5 November 2022 auction was the show’s tale of two markets. Omar and Oz went first and rewrote the record books. Then rising interest rates did the judging: Tom and Sarah-Jane scraped over reserve by $20,000.99, and Rachel and Ryan, Ankur and Sharon, and Dylan and Jenny all passed in. It was the show’s weakest overall result since 2011, and it foreshadowed the reserve-price arguments that would boil over in Daylesford three years later.
Where Are They Now?
Neale Whitaker stepped back from the full-time panel after this season, with Marty Fox arriving as a guest judge in 2023 and never giving the seat back. The Gisborne season also proved the show could leave Melbourne entirely, paving the way for Phillip Island in 2024, Daylesford in 2025 and the Mount Eliza water views of 2026.
