The Block 2026, Episode 24: Mussels, Muscles, and a Grout Line Truce

Halfway through the season, and Scott Cam decides the best way to test five exhausted renovators is a live cook-off with mussels, actual live mussels, most of which nobody on this street has touched before. By Friday, one team is $10,000 richer, one team’s tiling has been ripped off and rebuilt on someone else’s dime, and one contestant has stormed off site over a bedhead. Business as usual.

Key Moments Today

  • DRAMAWyatt storms off site after a 40-minute round trip for an unwrapped, rain-soaked bedhead ends in Chantel calling him rude: “I’m pissed off. I’m going home.”
  • ARGUMENTCourtney and Sev’s freshly laid wall tiles get ripped off mid-challenge on Nine in Six’s orders over a growing grout gap: “1 to 100, I’m probably 100.”
  • DISASTERChantel and Wyatt’s Mussels for Muscles entry goes out half-raw: “Half of them aren’t cooked. They’re not open properly.”
  • DRAMATayla’s twin sister Shannen trashes her meadow wallpaper backstage just as the judges fall in love with it: “It was a big no from me when I saw it last night.”

It’s Thursday, the exact halfway mark of the season, and the Blockheads are given a break from tools for the Mussels for Muscles challenge at Point Leo Estate on the Mornington Peninsula. With Michelin-starred chef Joseph Espuga and local mussel farmer Harry Harris judging, the prize was serious: $10,000 cash, a Speediance home gym, and the return of the bonus-point gnome. Adam and Jolene, who by their own admission had “never seen a mussel, never touched a mussel,” threw together a simple chilli and garlic version and somehow walked away with the win, a result nobody saw coming less than an hour after they were googling how to open one. It’s a timely boost for House 1, still climbing out of last week’s $20,000 overspend on a $10,000 room win. Chantel and Wyatt fared considerably worse, serving a dish where, in the judges’ words, “half of them aren’t cooked,” having decided their strategy was to “throw it all in a pot and hope for the best.”

Back on site, the real fallout was already brewing in House 4. While Courtney and Sev were off cooking mussels, Nine in Six’s site team made the call to rip freshly laid wall tiles off their guest suite bathroom, judging the grout gaps unacceptable after their tiler tried stretching tiles to match a 5mm size mismatch between the wall and floor stock. Sev rated his mood “100 out of 100,” and Courtney was furious the call was made without so much as a phone call. It took until Friday’s boardroom sit-down with site super Aidan and GMac to smooth things over, and only after Nine in Six agreed to cover the retiling bill entirely did the pair let it go, capping the reconciliation with a hugged-out coffee photo at McCafe.

Thursday’s build also paused for something more serious than tiles or timelines: a TIACS and Bunnings breakfast on site, raising awareness of mental health in the construction industry, where Australia loses a tradie to suicide on average every two days. It’s a heavy stat for a renovation show to sit with, and to their credit the Blockheads did, several visibly moved by how close to home it hits an industry they work in every day.

Elsewhere, House 2’s day ended in tears of a different kind when Wyatt’s Cursio-truck run for Chantel’s bedhead turned into a 40-minute round trip through the rain with nothing to protect it, and a phone call accusing him of being rude tipped him over the edge entirely. He walked, came back, and by Friday the pair had pulled off a solo Scotty and Shelley walkaround anyway, high praise and all. Over in House 5, Spence’s steady hand had Tayla further ahead on a Friday than she’s ever been, even if her own twin sister wasn’t sold on the meadow-print Grafico wallpaper going up in the bedroom. House 3’s bathroom curse rolled on with a delivery-only glazier throwing another spanner into Lisa and Rosco’s week, and the judges, by the sound of Friday’s closing tease, are not feeling especially generous about what they’re about to walk into.

Halfway through the season, and it’s mussels won, tiles lost, and at least one bedhead nearly ended a marriage. Back Sunday for the guest suite reveal, where the judges are already promising a result nobody’s going to love.
