Backyard and Garage Week hit its third day with more than 1,800 square metres of space to finish, a frosty share house and a stormwater pipe that nobody could find. The only thing in short supply, other than money, was personal space.
Key Moments Today
- DRAMAScott tells the share house’s three extra guests they have to move out, and Jimbo’s answer is immediate: “We’re moving out.”
- DISASTERHouse Three concretes over an uncapped stormwater pipe with “17 blokes standing here and not one person could put the cap on it”.
- ARGUMENTJolene on House Four’s garage: “They have absolutely tried to copy every single thing we’ve tried to do.”
- ARGUMENTThe farewell dinner turns into a second share house meeting, and an old dispute between Wyatt and Jolene resurfaces.
Thirteen Bodies, One Meeting
Adam’s son Kai, his mate Nick and Rosco’s dad Jimbo had been staying at the share house, with Jimbo in a swag in the shed and the boys in the SaltPod. The other housemates called a meeting to ask how long they planned to stay, and whether anyone was getting paid.
The answer: minimum wage, about $25 an hour, plus free accommodation. Some housemates called it an unfair advantage; others wished they’d thought of it. The meeting solved nothing, but it did get the guests’ hosts talking.
“It just seems a little bit like a storm in a teacup.”
Lisa
Eviction Notice and a Farewell Dinner
Scott then delivered the verdict: Chantel had said she was uncomfortable, so Jimbo and the boys had to go. Chantel, who said she felt pushed into being the spokesperson, explained that her concern was the crowded house, not any one person.
Lisa hosted a farewell dinner for Jimbo at Canadian Bay. Chantel and Wyatt skipped it, and the evening turned into a second argument. By the end, Courtney apologised to Jolene for telling her how she should feel, and a tearful goodbye to Jimbo followed.
A Pipe, a Carton and 17 Blokes
At House Three, a stormwater pipe riser in the fire-pit slab had been cut off, not capped, before crushed rock and concrete went over it. Gmac warned it could cost thousands. Jimbo said the plumber turned up and he thought it was done; Rosco said the finger-pointing was a lot of handballing.
They found the pipe, dug it out and capped it, and the whole drama cost a carton of beer.
The Copycat Garage
House One and House Four are both fitting a car detailing system from Blahst, a Chery charger and a Cellar Creations wine cellar. Jolene found out House Four had emailed Blahst and credited her for the idea. Her take: “The girls need to [bleep] off and get their own ideas.” Courtney’s reply: “I’ve not copied one thing from their room. Not one thing.”
The wine rack, saved at the last minute, arrived on a trailer and was carried in by a procession of contestants.
“We’re just carrying the body of everyone else’s dreams.”
House Four
Cheryoke, Block Bucks and a $5,000 Coffee
The teams recorded one-minute songs for $10,000 from Chery, to be judged by Eliza and Liberty at a drive-in screening. The day also delivered some good news:
- Freedom: a $10,000 outdoor furniture voucher for each team, to be spent as Block Bucks.
- Solar: Zelora is installing solar panels and an Anker battery in every house, with the buyer getting a 10-year subscription free.
- Hardest Worker: Rosco won $5,000 from McCafe and teared up: “I’m tearing up.”
House Two and House Three also learned they have to go through House One’s yard to reach their front yards. Adam: “As long as he needs access, I’ll keep it open.”
What’s Next
The $10,000 Cheryoke winner is announced at the end of tonight’s episode, and there are still five days to tools down. See how the backyards turn out on our gardens page.
