Kitchen Week landed on The Block last night with a $250,000 appliance package, a $60,000 fridge, and a Wolf oven getting more tender loving care than most of the contestants are showing each other. Somewhere between the curved benchtops and the plaster invoices, the actual drama of the day turned out to be who was going to do the washing up. Over on Reddit, meanwhile, fans skipped the dishes entirely and went straight for the show’s soul.

The top post on r/TheBlock in the last day wasn’t about a room at all. Under the title “This doesn’t feel right,” 71 comments piled up debating whether a show building $3.6 million houses for the top 1 per cent has any business calling itself aspirational, with more than a few readers pining for the days of Kmart budgets and renovated fixer-uppers instead of another beige mega-build.

Not everyone in the thread wanted a revolution. One commenter shrugged that the show is “escapist entertainment,” not a housing policy platform, and that ratings don’t lie. But it was u/Jajaloo who landed the cleanest shot, torching the whole argument by demanding The Voice get cancelled too on the grounds that plenty of Australians can’t carry a tune. It is, genuinely, the most efficient dismantling of a Reddit thread we’ve seen all week.
What the Mastheads Ran Today
TV Blackbox’s recap of Monday night’s episode confirmed Kitchen Week has arrived with a vengeance. Courtney and Sev are finally cashing in the $250,000 E&S appliance package they banked earlier in the season, Adam and Jolene have turned their island bench to chase the view, and Rick and Tayla spent the day discovering their plasterer had been, in Tayla’s words, “taking the piss” on the invoices, before House 4’s trades stepped in to bail them out at half the price.
But the story with legs was back at the share house. Lisa and Rosco served up an Aldi bolognese they insisted on calling “spag bog,” and once the plates were down, Chantel and Wyatt rinsed their own and headed off to the gym, leaving the rest to clean up. Jolene wasn’t having it, declaring they treat the place “like a restaurant,” while Rick kept his review to two words: “Wyatt’s a pig.” Nothing like a dishes roster to bring out everyone’s true character.
